2009 Australia Post 200 Years PNC, Featuring a One Dollar Uncirculated Coin and 55 cent commemorative stamp. The nineteenth century posting box featured on the coin is located in the Melbourne suburb of Newport and is still in use. Made of cast iron these post boxes were made to last. Prior to the advent of the first cast iron posting boxes in Sydney in 1856, the public handed in letters at a post office or to a postman on his delivery round. Today there are nearly 16,000 posting boxes on streets throughout Australia - a figure that our early pioneers could never, in their most optimistic dreams have imagined.
