Selecting the Perfect Engagement Ring - The 4 C's of Diamonds
Selecting an engagement ring can be a daunting experience especially when you consider it is a ring that will be worn every day and treasured for life. We can help you select your special ring, whether it is for an engagement or anniversary celebration, so you can be sure you have the best quality design and stone to suit your budget and style. All diamonds sold by Adelaide Exchange are assessed against the 'Four C's' and on this page we explain the four most important characteristics in determining a diamond's value:
The cut refers to the diamond's reflective quality – not the actual shape of the diamond. This is the most important factor in determining the quality of any diamond.
A good cut gives a diamond its brilliance. A perfectly cut diamond will take light in and shoot it straight back out again, emitting a dazzling and sparkling light.
Clarity measures the flawlessness of a diamond, in terms of how many flaws or blemishes are present.
A diamond that is free of inclusions and surface blemishes is very rare and therefore extremely valuable.
The clarity of a diamond will determine its identity, since no two diamonds are the same. It provides a 'fingerprint' for all diamonds.
Diamonds naturally come in every colour of the rainbow. Yet the best colour for a diamond is no colour at all.
Colours of diamonds are ranked from completely clear and colourless through to a light yellow.
Differences between diamond colour grades are subtle and only a trained jeweller and an expert eye can properly grade a diamond.
The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. The bigger the carat weight, the rarer the diamond, and therefore the higher the price.
One carat is divided into 100 'points'. For example, a diamond of 75 points weighs .75 carats.
The carat weight of a diamond is easy to determine, however two diamonds of equal carat weight can significantly differ in value due to their cut, clarity and colour.
